I should start with the beginning, with Akalabeth, Ultima I, and Wizardry I, but I really didn't play '80s PC RPGs, so I don't have much of any personal experience with them, going from Akalabeth to the SSI Gold Box RPG series (the Pools of Radiance trilogy being the most important of those). Also super predatory on microtransactions and what not. ESO is quite boring gameplay wise, but at least it gives tons of lore stuff that previously was mentioned in books. But it removed so many systems from previous games that is hardly an RPG and the writting is the worst. Skyrim looks the best and finally it seems objects have some real weight to them. but the faces are fuel for nightmare and the leveling system is broken beyond repair. Oblivion has the best side quests, guilds, daedra quests. But some design choices are plain dumb and even when it came out roll and dice combat was dated. Morrowind has a great main story and it´s completely unique.

It´s also super broken and unplayable without Unity. Daggerfall has one of the most ambitious world maps in gaming history. Games are for fun, so go have fun instead of letting sad, lonely trolls suck you into a "which is best" discussion for which there is no real answer. Cheat, or don't, or cheat a little, or a lot, or what the hell does it matter? It's not like most of them are online, your play experience can neither enhance nor spoil anyone else's. Use mods, or don't, or play it one way and then the other for a change. They all have their own appeals that work best for a given audience, and spending your time arguing over which is the best is an incredibly poor investment of your limited lifespan when you could be playing more Elder Scrolls games.Įnjoy whichever game you like in whatever manner suits you best. There's no objective "best" of entertainment products. Whatever you enjoy most is what you should play, and if you have a particular inclination against any on installation of the franchise you don't have to play it. Each is a unique experience with its own quirks and delights. They are all the best, the worst, and everything in between.
